How to Have a Safe and Enjoyable Halloween in your Condo

Holidays can bring the condominium community together and if you are striving to be the best condo management company, the Halloween as an opportunity should not be missed. Celebrating the Halloween represents a great community tradition as kick-off to the upcoming other Fall and Winter holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving.

With Halloween around the corner, the condo management should communicate the important information to residents or to the board of directors. In a townhouse complex, one resident may consider decorating changing the wreath on their door, another resident may take the opportunity to transform their home into a haunted graveyard equipped with caskets, headstones, and strobe lights.

Recognizing that it may be a challenge to reconcile the differing levels of celebration within a single community, the condo management should be proactive and communicate proactively:

1. Set a specific hours and boundaries for trick or treating. The condo management should communicate on the time window your trick or treating allowed and/or on what timeframe decorations allowed in your townhouse condo corporation. For a high-rise condo it’s not recommendable to allow door to door canvassing. Instead, set up your trick or treating station in the lobby and invite residents to participate.
2. Approach decorating reasonably. Consider and avoid lighting and tripping hazards. Your condo may consider restrictions on flashing or extremely bright lights. Having Halloween rules in place will be helpful.
3. Remind residents about Noise Restrictions and Parking Rules.

Halloween parties may take place throughout the neighborhood or in some of the units and at different times of the day. The condo management should remind residents of the rules on noise levels, parking rules and safety issues. Ask to drive safely and watch out for trick-or-treaters.

4. Promote community spirit in your high-rise condo by invite residents to greet children in the Lobby. Consider some contests for residents with prize awards: e.g. Best Costume, Pumpkin Carving Contest and etc.
5. Provide safety tips for parents.

At the same time, Halloween can be scary for parents. Costumes can be dangerous, too much candy can be sickening and walking around at night can be risky. Below are some tips (in anagram form) that will make sure your little ghouls and goblins have a safe Halloween:

S – Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

A – Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Children should walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

F – Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see trick-or-treaters.

E – Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before they’re eaten.
