CityTowers Property Management is happy to share the news of its recent achievement in unraveling the biggest utility dispute in its 16-year history. This dispute involved a Major Toronto Gas Supply Company that had overcharged one of CityTowers’ managed Corporations, a high-rise building with over 500 units, $516k for extra charges over a period of 9 months.
CityTowers’ management team put their heads together and thoroughly reviewed the volume of historical utility consumption data. The management found inconsistencies in seasonal patterns and unreasonable variances in charges. The Board of Directors approved the plan submitted by the management, and they made complaints with the Ombuds Office and Measurement Canada about the unfair treatment.
After four long months of investigation, the utility company accepted that they had a problem with the meter due to malfunctioning batteries, which led to inaccurate readings and unjustifiable charges. They revised the bills based on actual readings, resulting in a credit of $544k in the Corporation’s account.
CityTowers’ special meeting resulted in the involvement of energy specialists to review the claimed utility charges. The review proved that the charges were outside the comparable consumption averages of energy-efficient buildings.
This outcome, while not without its challenges, is a testament to CityTowers’ dedication to providing superior and ethical condominium management services. It took many long hours from the Management Team to provide evidence and maintain communication with the Ombuds Office and the Board of Directors throughout the four-month-long process.
The original, wrongful charges would have resulted in a special assessment and financial distress to more than 500 condo owners.
